Description
The opioid epidemic continues to be attributed to record numbers of overdoses in young adults. Clinicians are taxed with seeking effective means of treating them, many of whom have an extensive relapse history despite multiple treatment stays. Given that adulthood is now delayed, regardless of addiction, by more than a decade, Enable-ism’s principles provide relevant information and practical tools that support recovery and eventual maturation. This increases the responsibility and autonomy of the addict while developing healthy adult relationships. Examining the opioid epidemic through the developmental theory of Emerging Adulthood places a greater emphasis on potential rather than pathology, providing a fresh approach to Family Systems.
