Description

The workshop will be conducted entirely through role-play, starting with a mock patient in the Preparation or Action Stage of Change who is resistant to using support services. Two "stages" for role-play will be set up in the center of the room. Role-play "A" is a physician's office where a physician actor will work to clarify the resistance of a mock patient. Role-play "B" (a mock A.A. meeting) will also be setup at the start; the action will move between these stages. The audience will follow the patient from the physician’s office into a support group meeting, his or her resistance and discomfort will be acted out in both arenas. The focus of the audience will be shifted from “A” to “B” and back again.

CE Outline:
Objective 1: Demonstrate effective communication skills to work with patients who are resistant to attending support groups
Objective 2: Discuss and develop strategies to effectively impact areas of difficulty for patients relating to 12-step recovery.
Objective 3: Compare and contrast styles of interacting with patients through role-playing.
