What You Think You Know About Non-Suicidal Self-injury Versus Reality: How Getting It Right Can Make All of the Difference
Date & Time
Tuesday, April 16, 2019, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Lori Vann, MA, LPCS
It is no secret that there has been an increase in the number of Non-Suicidal Self-injury incidents on a national and international level during the last ten years. However, most clinicians are either unaware as to the increase, how to properly assess for it, are uncomfortable dealing with the behavior, or lack the knowledge to recommend the best courses of action. The lack of knowledge becomes a significant risk factor for a suicide attempt or a path into another dangerous "coping" skill. Even if attendees are uncomfortable treating this population, they will better understand what to avoid doing during an assessment while also improving treatment outcomes.
